Who is entitled to Italian Nationality?
The basic principle for obtaining Italian citizenship is ius sanguinis, meaning the right by blood. Therefore, all descendants of Italians are Italian by birth.
Italian legislation considers all descendants of Italians, whether through the paternal or maternal line, with no generational limit, have the right to Italian nationality, with some exceptions.
How to Obtain Italian Nationality?
Paternal Line
The process through the paternal line applies when all direct Italian ancestors of the applicant are male. This is the simplest way to obtain the Italian nationality since the maternal line process has some restrictions depending on the case.
Maternal Line
In 1948, women were granted the right to pass on Italian nationality. Recognition of nationality through the maternal line must be done judicially, because this is the only option for cases which the woman is in the descent line and the child was born before 1948. All children born after 1948 are entitled to apply for Italian citizenship through the maternal line without any restrictions specified in the Italian nationality law, as guaranteed by the constitution. If they were born before 1948 (e.g., 1947), the claim is maternal and therefore, the claim must be applied in the normal way, through the consulate.
Find out which documents are required
According to Italian law, the following documents are necessary for the nationality process: birth certificates, marriage certificates, and negative certificates (Negative Nationality Certificate).
