Great-grandchildren of Portuguese citizens are entitled to Portuguese nationality

If the second-generation ancestor (grandfather or grandmother) is already deceased, the process should follow the same path as for grandchildren.

If both first-generation (parent) and second-generation (grandparent) ancestors are alive, the applicant can either follow the process for grandchildren (skipping a generation) or proceed with the process for children (first dealing with the grandfather or grandmother’s nationality, then the parent’s nationality, and finally, their own).

If the applicant is married or divorced, we recommend regularizing their marital status in Portugal to avoid issues when requesting Portuguese documents (citizen card and Portuguese electronic passport) from Portuguese authorities.
