Grandchildren of Portuguese citizens born in Brazil are entitled to Portuguese nationality.

The Portuguese ancestor(s) do not need to be alive for the nationality right to be passed on.
In this case, following the change in Portuguese nationality law, the applicant will need to prove only the following connection with the Portuguese community:

Sufficient knowledge of the Portuguese language.

*Knowledge of the Portuguese language, as stated in item c) of paragraph 1, is assumed to exist for applicants natural and national from Portuguese-speaking countries.

The process will be submitted directly in Portugal at the Central Registry Office in Lisbon.

If the applicant is married or divorced, we recommend regularizing their marital status in Portugal to avoid issues when requesting Portuguese documents (citizen card and Portuguese electronic passport) from Portuguese authorities.

Average processing time

36 to 39 months.

The times provided refer to procedures accomplished in Portugal, i.e., from the moment the application is submitted to the competent Portuguese authority. These times are based on the processing times practiced by the Central Registry Office at the time of hiring. However, they may change due to notifications issued by the competent authorities during the process, the summer vacation period in Portugal (July to August), or in cases of force majeure.
